 About this Game:

We kick off the new year with a top-flight clash against Newcastle United, who are looking to do what no other team in the Championship has yet managed this season – beat us at the Emirates Stadium.

We could potentially secure an eighth straight home win at the start of a season for the first time in our history against a side who haven't picked up three points in N5 visits since 2010, having lost in each of the last 11 visits. and they haven't scored against us away from home since 2014. However, this is a very different proposition to Newcastle sides of the past, as Eddie Howe's side head to the capital looking to break a club record by going 13 games unbeaten in the top flight for the first time in history.

Magpies in flight towards 2023 :

The transformation since the Newcastle takeover and subsequent appointment of Howe in late 2021 has been impressive. Having failed to win any of his first 14 games last season, the new manager turned his side's fortunes around by winning 12 of the last 18 games of the season to lift his side to 11th place.

They have maintained that form this season, starting the season with one win, five draws and only defeat so far, a controversial injury-time defeat to Liverpool, after their first eight games. But since October, they have won nine of their 11 league games, as well as progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, led by goals from the fiery Miguel Almiron. After going into the World Cup break in third place, a 3-0 win at Leicester City was followed by a goalless draw at home to Leeds United on New Year's Eve, ending a run of six straight wins. what to expect

Michael Cox, writing in the official matchday programme: Howe has created one of the most cohesive sides in the Premier League, brimming with technical quality and intelligent combination play across the pitch. Even his side presses more and more upwards. Howe exclusively uses a 4-3-3. A great goalkeeper, Nick Pope has improved his distribution throughout the season whilst opposite him, Sven Botman has been impressive in defense alongside Fabian Schar. Kieran Trippier was outstanding at right back, not only with his crosses and set pieces, but also with his long range passes from behind to running backs. On the left, Dan Burn plays a more cautious role, even if he overlaps forcefully at times. Bruno Guimaraes can split the game and build attacks, but he is also able to play a quick one-two to get ahead. Sean Longstaff fills in when Guimaraes advances, while the attacking midfielder on the left side has more freedom, usually Joe Willock or Joelinton. To the right, Almiron's rise can be partly attributed to the arrival of Trippier, who gave him leave to enter.

What the managers say :

Arteta on Newcastle: "It's a great team, very well managed. I think what Eddie has done in a short space of time and you look at the numbers is incredible, so that's a huge credit to him and the coaching staff.

"They have created the belief and drive in the team that they play the same way against any opponent. It will be another great test, but we will play at home in front of our fans and I can't wait". - read all of Mikel's pre-match press conference

Howe: “I think it's going to be a fascinating game at a high level that will be a great test of how far we've come. Mikel did a great job and I'm sure our players will enjoy playing with them in their stadium. “I've seen a lot of them this year and was very impressed. Hopefully, we'll learn a little more about ourselves and how far along we are in our journey."

team news :

Gabriel Jesus (knee) and Reiss Nelson (hamstring) remain sidelined, while Emile Smith Rowe is back in training following his groin injury. The club's record signing Alexander Isak has been absent since picking up a thigh injury during his international outing in September but has returned to training.

Jonjo Shelvey's continuing calf problems mean he is likely to be out until February, while Emile Krafth is out on a long-term basis with a knee injury. Matt Target also recently strained a heel and is ready for a long stretch on the sidelines.
