Klay Thompson led the Hawks with 54 points, but Kevin Looney was the hero as the Warriors earned their fifth straight victory.
Thompson made 10 3-pointers, while Looney hit the game-winning shot as time expired. Klay Thompson torched the Hawks with 54 points on 10 3-pointers on Monday, but it was Kevon Looney who played the hero with the winning prediction as time expired to give Golden State a wild 143-141 overtime win. It was the Warriors' fifth straight win and 17th at home to lead the league. Now if they could only figure out what they are like, where they are 3-16, worst in the league, but that's a story for another day. Right now, Thompson is starting to revert to his previous form. The man has never been shy, but his discretion has improved as the season has progressed.
However, Thompson hit an impressive 108 shots, including 60 from 3-point range, in his last four games. He's posting a 46-41 shooting split in that span. The Warriors will gladly accept him, especially with Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins still out. Thompson went 21-for-39 from the field on Monday. He hit 10 for 21 for 3. Most refreshing was that he went 2 of 2 from the free throw line. He's not an efficient model, but for sheer entertainment value, you can't beat a guy tossing 21 cubes, mostly from decks, against only two presents. You can't find dirty games here.
It was the second-most goals of Thompson's career, behind his 60 points in just 29 minutes against the Indiana Pacers in 2016. Monday was the fourth 50-point game of Thompson's career and the seventh in which he hit at least 10 3-pointers. He has already done the latter twice this season, previously recording 10 3-pointers against Houston in November. Thompson is the sixth player in NBA history to record at least 50 points and 10 3-pointers in the same game.
Don't think I forgot about Looney, who had 14 points and 21 rebounds, including 11 offensive, but was somehow the worst game minus 20 in 32 minutes. The plus-minus numbers from a single game will be worthless metrics.
Here's the winning tip: The Warriors have three games left in their eight-game stretch of the season, and they're all very easy to win against Detroit, Orlando and Phoenix, who are still without Devin Booker. Curry and Wiggins should be back soon. Are things really starting to settle down in the bay?
