12 WorldTeams will participate in Volta ao Algarve

The 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, the main cycling competition in the region, will take place from February 15 to 19, the Portuguese Cycling Federation has announced.

The event will feature five stages totaling 795km, including an individual time trial, and will attract 12 WorldTeams to the Algarve. The organizers say there will be "stages for all tastes", which has become "custom" with Volta ao Algarve and is described as "a key ingredient in attracting the best international teams and cyclists".

"The temperate climate of the Algarve in February, the variety of the route and its difficulty, with an accumulated elevation gain of 14,600 meters, make Volta ao Algarve the first clash of the season between the titans of the international group," they add.

PortimĆ£o will once again host the first leg of the event, which will be a 200.2km course concluding in Lagos. The second stage will be the first big test for the cyclists, who will start from Sagres for a route of 189.4 km which will end at the highest point of the Algarve, FĆ³ia, in the municipality of Monchique.

Day three will see the riders set off from Faro for a 203.1km stage, with the finish awaiting them in Tavira. For the fourth stage, the cyclists will depart from Albufeira to complete 177.9 kilometers to the top of MalhĆ£o, in the municipality of LoulĆ©.

As the time trial is reserved for the final day, climbers and their teams are expected to attack this stage to try and distance themselves from the timekeepers. The winner will be crowned in Lagoa on February 19 after a 24.4km time trial.
