Cardinals vs Falcons picks and predictions
Under head coach Kliff Kingsbury, the Arizona Cardinals have always had a shooter mentality. The team is averaging 214.6 yards per game, even with mediocre quarterbacks. The Cardinals are now down to their fourth QB of the season as Sunday approaches. Starter Kyler Murray is out with a torn ACL, Colt McCoy is in concussion protocol, and Trace McSorley has been ineffective in his two starts against Denver and New England. Kingsbury, who is struggling to keep his job, has opted to hand the offense over to David Blough. Blough's previous NFL experience was five starts with a lousy Detroit Lions team. Blough, who went undrafted and was recently on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, will now lead the Cardinals in a game that essentially means nothing to them.
But how much will Kingsbury trust him? His most recent action was in 2021 when he was with the Detroit and . In all, Blough has just five NFL appearances with a career passer rating of 62.2.
Instead of fully rolling the dice with Blough, Kingsbury could rely much more on the running game. The player responsible for most of that production will be lead running back James Conner.
Conner has been the one bright spot for the Cardinals. Since returning from a chest injury in November that sidelined him for a month of the season, Conner has been very productive. Over his last four games, Conner is averaging 86.7 yards per game. He had 15 or more carries in all of those starts.
The Atlanta Falcons have had trouble stopping the rush this year. They rank 24th in rush defense, allowing an average of 133.5 yards per game. This would be a perfect place for Kingsbury to use Conner more. I think Conner gets at least 20 carries and tops the total.
