The end of the 2023 Australian Open approaches with the men's semi-finals underway and the women's finals officially set. This competition has already seen everything from weather delays, night battles and surprising surprises. Players compete for a record prize pool of $76.5 million and it's not there

shortage of interesting stories:

Novak Djokovic, who has won at Melbourne Park a record nine times, is just one Grand Slam title short of Rafael Nadal's career record of 22 major titles. Djokovic was expelled from Australia a year ago because he hadn't been vaccinated against COVID-19, but he has returned to Melbourne after the country eased vaccine restrictions. He

He crushed the quarter -final with a direct victory over Andrey Rublev. Her next opponent is not planted American Tommy Paul. Paul reached the first major semifinal of his career and became the fourth American man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since 2017. He's not someone to be overlooked, having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year and third

round of the US Open. The 25-year-old can also boast big victories over opponents including Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Alexander Zverev.

No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas became the first player in the men's competition to earn a ticket to the semi-finals after beating Jiri Lehecka 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 on Tuesday. Take on Karen Khachanov for

a chance to reach the final and, if he wins it all, Tsitsipas could probably move up to number 1 in the ATP rankings for the first time.

Nadal, winner of last year's Australian Open, was looking to defend his No. 1 seed title, but fell to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round after a hip injury escalated during the second set. This was Nadal's first Grand Slam exit since the 2016 Australian Open. No. 2 seed Casper Ruud was also eliminated in the second round when American Jenson Brooksby pulled off a 6-3, 7 upset 5, 6-7 (4 -7) 6-2. The men's competition is without world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew due to a right leg injury sustained in training. Also missing is Marin Cilic, a former Melbourne Park finalist, who is injured. As for the women, 2022 Australian Open winner Ashleigh Barty will not defend her singles title as she retired from tennis last year. Venus Williams, who was granted a wild card, was preparing to compete in her 22nd Australian Open, but she had to withdraw due to an injury sustained at the ASB Classic in New Zealand. Naomi Osaka, who became pregnant

announcement earlier this week, she will not compete this month.

With those stars absent, this year's tournament is on the line. No. 5 seed Aryna Sabalenka is yet to drop a set in 2023. She officially reached her first Grand Slam final following a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over Magda Linette. The 24-year-old won 10 games in a row, including a career best 20.

consecutive sets. Sabalenka will face defending Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina for the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. Rybakina, the 22nd seed, was also solid as she dropped just one set in all of the competition. The 23-year-old was responsible for a loss to world No. 1 favorite Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. Rybakina earned it

ticket to the final after defeating two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and 41 minutes.

No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula fell to No. 24 seed Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals. Azarenka won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, but hasn't made it to the semifinals since.

World No. 2 Ons Jabeur fell to Marketa Vondrousova in an upset in the second round. In a written statement to the media, Jabeur said he was having difficulty breathing during the match. No. 7 seed Coco Gauff warmed up to start the year with a commanding win at the ASB Classic. She had a decent run at the Australian Open but lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round.
